This isn't the kind of cursed that's immediately evident and one grows accustomed to over time, it's a creeping slow burn. A continuous, strangely fixed and steady gaze that grows more unsettling or upsetting over time. Turn it as you like, there is no 'correct' display angle.
Mid-century American decor saw a flood of copies of older sculptures in new mediums and smaller scales. Georgian and victorian youth were a common theme. Among one of the more popular, copies of a sculpture of Alexandre Brongiart from in the 1700s.
This bust seems to be a descendant of that historic lineage but through artistic marriage of several first cousins & perhaps a sibling or two. A smaller version made of chalkware, cast over hard foam to keep it lighter and less expensive to produce.
At certain angles, if you don't look too closely, nothing seems to be amiss. But should your weight shift or your attention linger more than a fleeting second, things quickly begin to go awry. The eyes, wider apart than they should be, drift diagonally from one another and look two different directions. The head elongates, protruding upward at strange angles, The angles of neck and recessed chin don't seem to match from side to side of the oddly turned head.
The lace and buttons on the blouse don't match from one side to the other. The elongated neck-shoulder combo sloping to a barrel chest suggesting he was a buxom young lad despite the deepest V neckline showing a smooth and steady descent. Overall just wrong in rather anomalous and unsettling ways... won't you invite him in?
Measures 9" tall, 5" wide and 4" deep, weighing just under 2lbs.
In nice overall vintage shape with standard surface patina. Slight surface scratch to right cheek, surface chips and scratches to rear underside. Pedestal base was broken and sturdily repaired at some point though back right has a deep chip where the interior foam is visible.
