The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come by John Fox, Jr. with Pictures by N.C. Wyeth - Charles Scribner’s Sons, 1931 first Wyeth-illustrated edition - First Edition, First Printing

This novel, written in 1903,,,, less than 40 years after the end of the American Civil War, tells the fascinating story of a young Kentucky boy who finds himself at odds with those around him when he joins the Union Army. Considered by some to be "one of the most perceptive tellings of the Civil War experience" and its agonizing effects on border states.

In nice enough condition that, if not for the inscription, one might initially mistake it for a much later reprint. Hardcover with black cloth wrapped board covers with very slight edgewear and corner dings. Pasted front panel with beautiful color... little to no fading, small number of very slight surface chips & scratches. Gold gilt spine with very little fading. Small bit of cloth rubbing & surface fraying to top left corner of the front cover. Binding is tight, pages are clean and crisp with only minor tanning & oxygenation, no rips, tears or folds. Pastedowns and leader pages have slightly more toning and very faint foxing, more in the front than the reverse.

Ex libris on the interior of front cover, slight ripple on the following page. 1933 inscription by an early owner. Very white, clean full color illustrated cover page and plates throughout. Measures roughly 7" x 9.5" x 1.25" -- 322 pages, color pictoral endpapers, title page and 10 full page color plates by N.C. Wyeth. "Scribner Series of Illustrated Classics" page at back which is actually not split from the following page at the right edge. Rough cut page ends, top edge is a different color... perhaps originally gilded or colored and faded from age.
